Impact of Water quality on Irrigation in Wajir District, Kenya

Wajir is one of the three districts which constitute the North Eastern Province of Kenya. It is one of the most Arid district in Kenya and there are no perennial rivers. Consequently groundwater is almost entirely the source of water supply. In this paper the impact of ground water quality on irrigation is assessed on the basis of sodium and salinity hazards. the data has been analysed by use of sodium absorption ration (SAR) model developed by the U.S. Salinity Laboratory Staff (1954). The result of the analysis have revealed that sodium and salinity hazards range from medium to very high except in isolated areas where the hazards are low. Research on appropriate crop has been suggested and optimum utilization of groundwater from Lorian Swamp aquifer has been recommended
