Models for x-ray and radio emission from clusters of galaxies

Description

Inverse Compton models for the extended x-ray sources observed in rich clusters of galaxies are developed and discussed. A discussion of thermal bremsstrahlung models is also included. Solutions are obtained for the diffusion from a stationary point source of relativistic particles which are inverse Compton scattering from the universal black-body background radiation. The diffusion of particles from a moving source is also considered. The steady-state solution obtained when inverse Compton energy losses are balanced by the injection of new particles is applied to the Perseus cluster of galaxies. Relating the cluster x-ray emission to the core-halo radio source 3C84A and assuming that the size of both sources is determined by energy losses, a self-consistent model is obtained. Finally, the cosmological evolution of the luminosity and size of inverse Compton sources is considered and, based upon the sensitivity of a source's flux to the energy density of the universal black-body radiation, a test for their presence is suggested
