TMI-2: how the cleanup is coming

The author describes the major phases of the TMI-2 recovery project during the six years since the accident. The objective of the first phase of the recovery operation was to achieve and maintain safe and stable conditions in the reactor and its attendant systems. The second major phase is the removal of the damaged reactor fuel from the plant. A summary of funding sources for the TMI-2 clean-up effort is presented. Diagrams illustrate the recovery schedule, reactor building radiological status and the TMI-2 defueling system. The author believes that they have a sound organization and a sound technical program and that they have reached a point at which the clean-up and recovery project can now be completed on schedule and within their program plan
