Interaction of Strong High-Frequency Waves with a Plasma

As a result of the fact that free electrons in a plasma are particularly susceptible to the action of an electrical field, very peculiar phenomena can be produced in a completely ionized plasma by the action of a strong high-frequency field. Such phenomena are possible in conditions when the rate of oscillation of the electrons is no longer small in comparison with their thermal velocities. In this case the oscillations of the plasma itself are determined by an external high-frequency field. Instabilities arise in the plasma, and this must lead to turbulence of the plasma caused by the strong high-frequency field. On the other hand, under some conditions this field has a stabilizing effect on unstable plasma states. The paper contains a theoretical review predicting some of these phenomena. (author)
