Description

First results from the B factories are coming out. Preliminary determination of Φ1, the large CP asymmetry in B → ψ KS has been announced by both Belle and Babar. I was asked to give an introductory talk on CP violation which can be understood by an audience of varying interest. I was reluctant to write up my talk as such talks have been written up in 'CP Violation in Particle and Astrophysics' held at Blois back in 1989 and 1999. In this written up version of my talk, I will refer the reader to these references for the introduction and discuss how to go beyond the φ1 measurement. In particular, I will discuss a new method to determine Φ2 - Φ1. We have introduced a method to measure Φ2 - Φ1 which is independent of hadronic dynamics. Methods for determining Φ3 have been discussed in text books. A self tagging method which requires measurement of B0 → D0+ K*0, B0 → D-bar0K*0, B0 → D0K*0 has been suggested by Dunietz. Here D+0 is combination of D0 and D-bar0 which is a CP eigenstate. Note that Br(B0 → D0+K*0) = Br(B0 →DK*0)Br(D → CP eigenstate) is suppressed by Br(D→CP eigenstates) ∼ 5 x 10-3 for ππ and K+K-. While it is difficult to perform this measurement, if possible, it will allow us to obtain all three angles, thus we can test for possible presence of new physics. (author)
