EUROGAM: a new gamma spectrometer for a new dimension of nuclear structure studies

Creators

Description

A new gamma spectrometer, EUROGAM, is presently built in a France-UK collaboration. It should be operational with 45 Ge counters surrounded by BGO anti-Compton shields beginning 1992 at Daresbury. It will be transferred and completed to 70 counters beginning 1993 at Strasbourg with the aim to exploit the beams of the new accelerator Vivitron. The most advanced techniques in integrated electronics and in computing are used to control, monitor and store the high data acquisition rate expected from this large array. The lowering of the detection limits (factor 102 in phase 1 and factor 104 in phase 2 are expected) as compared to the present one (a few fractions of %) will mean new developments in nuclear structure studies.
