Experimental study on the detection of free fluids and gases in waste packages by non-destructive evaluation

Description

The objective of the project was to evaluate the potential and the limits of various non-destructive methods for testing the contents of 200-litre drums filled with radioactive waste. The following tests were carried out from outside: 1. Detection of free water on the surface of the waste matrix (concrete); 2. Determination of the waste matrix level; 3. Determination of internal gas pressure. The following methods were found to be suitable: For Task 1, measurement of Lamb wave attenuation, acoustic impedance measurement (AIM) and analysis of swash sound; for Task 2, AIM method and measurement of Lamb wave attenuation; for Task 3, a method of pressure compensation and analysis of cover resonance after striking the cover. It was not possible, however, to detect the concrete level by localization of friction points using acoustic emission methods. (orig.) With 3 tabs., 53 figs

Abstract (German)

Zielsetzung des Vorhabens war es, Moeglichkeiten und Grenzen verschiedener (nicht-nuklearer) Verfahren fuer eine zerstoerungsfreie Pruefung des Inhalts von mit radioaktiven Abfaellen gefuellten 200 l-Faessern aufzuzeigen. Folgende Pruefaufgaben waren gestellt: 1. Feststellung von freiem Wasser an der Oberflaeche des Matrixmaterials Beton, 2. Ermittlung des Fuellstands der Matrix, 3. Bestimmung des Gasdrucks im Fass. Als geeignet erwiesen sich folgende Verfahren: Fuer Pruefaufgabe 1 die Messung der Schwaechung von Ultraschall-(US) Plattenwellen, die Akustische Impedanz-Messung (AIM) und die Analyse von Schwappgeraeuschen; fuer Pruefaufgabe 2 ebenfalls die AIM-Methode und die Messung der Schaechung von US-Plattenwellen; fuer Pruefaufgabe 3 eine Methode der Druckkompensation am Deckel des Fasses sowie die Analyse der Deckelresonanzen nach Anschlagen des Deckels. Dagegen konnte der Fuellstand der Matrix nicht ueber die Reibegeraeusche festgestellt werden. (orig.) With 3 tabs., 53 figs
