The feasibility of activated charcoal for indoor radon control
Description
Indoor contamination by radon-222 and its decay products has recently been the focus of attention for the Environmental Protection Agency, the news media, and the public in general. This new awareness of the health hazard posed by radon has led to increased efforts to understand and alleviate the problem. Numerous methods for radon and/or decay product removal from uranium mines and indoor air are found in the literature. A method often cited involves radon adsorption on carbon. The authors have investigated radon adsorption on activated charcoal as a means of radon mitigation for indoor air. They have identified and studied several important adsorption parameters which need to be optimized. The parameters studied are flow rate, humidity, temperature, and charcoal type
