Compact generator of monochromatic positron beams using a 64Cu isotope

Description

The positron beam generator which is versatile in the research field using slow positrons is proposed. This device is based on the results of the confinement of 64Cu nonneutral plasma obtained so far, and to generate quasisteady monochromatic beam, modulated beam, ultra-large current-short pulse beam and so on corresponding to the purpose of research. The nonneutral plasma consisting of simple charged particles can be absolutely confined in the state of thermal equilibrium by a uniform axial magnetic field and hyperboloid of revolution type electrostatic potential. Accordingly, the long time of confinement can be realized, and the region of confinement can be extended. As for the generation of positrons, the rate of production has risen in both methods of using linacs and isotopes. Moreover, the state of positron plasma has been already realized. Based on these results, one positron beam generator can be devised, and the feature of its generating method is to place the confinement device of nonneutral positron plasma (accumulation part) next to the positron source. The positron source and the structure, radiation cooling and the accumulation of particles in the accumulation part, and beam control are described. (K.I.)
