Estimated carbon footprint from 1995 to 2020
Description
In 2020, according to provisional estimates, France's carbon footprint is estimated at 552 million tons of CO2 equivalent (Mt CO2 eq). In a context of sharply reduced travels and an economic slowdown linked to the health crisis, the footprint is down 9% on 2019. For the population as a whole, the carbon footprint is estimated at 8.2 t CO2 eq per person, compared with 9.0 tonnes in 2019. Emissions associated with imports account for almost half (49%) of the footprint. The carbon footprint is composed of 76% CO2, 16% CH4 and 8% NO2. Compared with 1995, France's carbon footprint has decreased by 15%: domestic emissions have fallen by 31%, while emissions associated with imports have risen by 12%. Given the increase in population, the evolution of the carbon footprint relative to the number of inhabitants decreases more sharply (-25%) between 1995 (11.0 t CO2 eq/person) and 2020

En 2020, selon des estimations provisoires, l'empreinte carbone de la France est estimee a 552 millions de tonnes equivalent CO2 (Mt CO2 eq). Dans un contexte de forte diminution des deplacements et de ralentissement de l'economie liee a la crise sanitaire, l'empreinte est en baisse de 9% par rapport a 2019. Ramenee a l'ensemble de la population, l'empreinte carbone est estimee a 8,2 t CO2 eq par personne, contre 9,0 tonnes en 2019. Les emissions associees aux importations representent pres de la moitie (49%) de l'empreinte. L'empreinte carbone est composee pour 76% de CO2, 16% de CH4 et 8% de NO2. Par rapport a 1995, l'empreinte carbone de la France a diminue de 15%: les emissions interieures se sont reduites de 31% tandis les emissions associees aux importations se sont accrues de 12%. Compte tenu de l'augmentation de la population, l'evolution de l'empreinte carbone rapportee au nombre d'habitants diminue plus fortement (-25%) entre 1995 (11,0 t CO2 eq/personne) et 2020
