Good for nothing

The UK Government's commitment to combined heat and power (CHP) is exemplified in its decision to make such plants exempt under the climate change levy. The government would like to see the present installed capacity of about 4,000 MW increased to 10,000 MW of CHP by 2010. Plans are afoot for a 140 million pound CHP project at Purfleet in Essex to supply industrial plants. The project will involve mainly the Norwegian companies IVO Energy and Saga Petroleum. Other major projects and contractors for CHP plants in the UK are discussed briefly. A step by step approach for appraising the feasibility of CHP is outlined. (UK)
