Description

Full text: From Three Mile Island to Chernobyl to Fukushima, one common lesson that is learned is to prevent severe accident at all cost. The human factor in nuclear power plant accidents involving severe core damage is discussed with particular reference to handle complex situations. However, Fukushima accident has entirely changed the scenario by realizing the complexities of sever accident due to natural disaster and identifying flaws in the design of defence in depth of a nuclear power plant and weaknesses in operators ability to handle these un-expected situations. In response to Fukushima NPPs Accident, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Corporate Office called a meeting to re-assess the safety of NPPs in Pakistan. In view of Stress-Test, targeted action plan called Fukushima Response Action Plan (FRAP) issued for KANUPP by Corporate Office in June 2011. My presentation will be concentrated on measures taken by KANUPP to cater for SBO. The main topics, I will cover in my presentation, are as under: (a) PAEC response in the wake of Fukushima Accident as already mention above; (b) Lessons from Fukushima on which actions are taken or being taken under FRAP; (c) Enhancement in Essential Power Supply Scheme using FIJW-DG1 and FIJW-DG2; (d) Installation of additional diesel generator (DE-DG6); (e) Enhancement in Emergency Power Supply Scheme (DC Power Capacity) by installation of DE-DG4 and DEDG5; (f) Provision of alternate power supply to ECC MOVs through DE-DG4 and DE-DG5; (g) Emergency cooling (including core cooling, spent fuel cooling and dousing spray) provisions through diesel driven EWI-P1 and EWI-P2; (h) Diesel Fuel inventory for continuous operation of all above mentioned DE-DGs as and when required.
