Development of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) for the detection of 81Kr and first application to groundwater dating

Description

Isotopic ratios of 81Kr/Kr were measured with accelerator mass spectrometry in pre-nuclear atmospheric krypton and in modem krypton. Within the experimental uncertainty (±30%) the 81Kr/Kr ratios were found to be the same. This establishes 81Kr (t1/2 = 230,000 years) as a long-lived cosmogenic radionuclide essentially unaffected by anthropogenic contributions. First applications of 81Kr to groundwater dating in the Great Artesian Basin of Australia enabled to obtain mean residence times of 225,000 to 400,000 years. (author)
