Development of an MIRD type phantom of Korea male and its application to radiation dosimetry
Description
Using the physique and anatomical data acquired from the on-going project on Reference Korean for radiation protection, a temporary MIRD- type Korean male phantom (Hanyang Analytical Male Phantom: HAMP) was constructed. HAMP is different a little from the MIRD5 phantom in external appearance, height, weight and location and size of some organs. By combining HAMP with the Monte Carlo code MCNP4B, dosimetric quantities including the effective dose were evaluated for photon radiation and compared with the corresponding values obtained with the MIRD5 phantom. The equivalent doses to the thyroid in HAMP appeared higher up to 50% than that in MIRD5 phantom at low energy of 0.1 MeV. The differences in effective dose reduces to about 10% at most. It appears that the organ location relative to the body surface is the key factor causing the differences. Although the dosimetric data produced in this study are not frozen, because HAMP is a temporary and partial model of the Reference Korean, the results explain the effects of changes in the phantom details and the methodology will be helpful for further works
