Assessment of radionuclide level in soil samples for partial areas of Hainan, China

Description

Objective: To evaluate the level of radioactivity in soil samples in some area of Hainan. Methods: During 2012, topsoil samples were collected from China's Hainan Province, in order to evaluate their radioactivity. The radioactivities of 15 soil samples have been measured with a low-background high-purity germanium gamma spectroscopy. Results: In the samples, the average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were (26.3 ± 1.0), (23.7 ± 0.9) and (366.1 ± 13.4) Bq·kg-1, respectively. And the activity concentration of 137Cs was found to vary from < 0.35 (minimum detectable activity concentration) to 2.25 Bq·kg-l. By using the results of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the sampled soils, the average outdoor gamma dose rate in air was calculated as (41.7 ± 1.5) nGy·h-1. Furthermore, the average outdoor annual effective dose from terrestrial radiation was 0.05 mSv. Conclusion: The results of soil sample analysis show that the measurement results of all the points are normal. (authors)
