Low-frequency instabilities in magnetized plasma with nonuniformly compressed flow

  • 1. Geophysical Research Institute and Geophysics Research Laboratory, University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113, Japan

Description

The new wave-particle adiabatic interaction due to compressed flow is found by kinetic equations. Compressed flow means VE0, where VE is the electric-field drift velocity. The adiabatic destabilization due to compressed flow is effective for the fast magnetosonic modes. These hydromagnetic drift instabilities would be important in the transition region where the Earthward motion of the tail plasma sheet is mostly retarded, as well as in laboratory adiabatic compression experiments.
