Bimodal fission

Description

The nuclei around heavy fermion isotopes show some peculiarities in their spontaneous-fission properties such as the mass and the total kinetic energy distributions of the fission fragments, the multiplicity distribution of neutrons emitted from the fragments and the spontaneous-fission half-lives Tsf. A short review of these properties with the emphasis to bimodal fission which consists in the simultaneous appearance of two different modes of fission for a given nucleus: one mode corresponding to a low (about 200 MeV) and the other to a high (around 240 MeV) kinetic energy of the fission fragments, is given. 9 refs., 10 figs.
