Processing of superconducting ceramics for high critical current density

Description

Two powder preparation methods, fine-milling of calcined powder and co-precipitation, were examined to improve the transport J/sub c/ of YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-x/ by obtaining fine-grained dense bodies. Both of the methods combined with careful processing conditions, could increase the J/sub c/ to over 1000 A/cm/sup 2/. The co-precipitated powder showed slightly better performance than the fine milled one. Inappropriate processing conditions such as over-sintering induced the J/sub c/ breakdown which was considered to be mainly due to cracking and oxygen deficiency
