Modern imaging diagnostics for malignant pancreatic tumours

Description
The incidence of pancreatic carcinomas has tripled over the past 40 years. Overall five-year-survival rates are relatively poor (5%). Surgical resection is feasible for only 20-30% of patients with newly diagnosed pancreatic carcinomas. If the tumour can be removed completely, however, the 5-year-survival rates are significantly better (40-63%). The goal of preoperative diagnostic imaging is to select patients for whom surgical resection is possible and to identify patients for curative surgery. For this purpose, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a promising method. It is a noninvasive imaging technique with unique multiplanar capabilities providing a soft tissue contrast superior to other cutting-edge imaging technologies, including spiral computed tomography. Abstract (German)
Die Inzidenz des Pankreas-Malignoms als boesartige Geschwulst der Bauchspeicheldruese hat in den vergangenen 40 Jahren um das Dreifache zugenommen. Das durchschnittliche 5-Jahres-Ueberleben ist mit 5% relativ schlecht. Eine Entfernbarkeit ist in nur 20 bis 30% aller diagnostizierten Pankreas-Malignome zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Entdeckung gegeben. Kann das Tumorleiden jedoch chirurgisch komplett kuriert werden, resultiert eine Verbesserung der 5-Jahres-Ueberlebensrate auf 40 bis 63%. Um diese Patienten frueh fuer eine Operation zu selektierten, ist heute eine schnelle und genaue Beurteilung der lokalen Ausdehnung der Geschwulst und evtl. Metastasen mit der Magnetresonanztomografie moeglich, die viele Modalitaeten in sich vereint und eine hohe Sensivitaet und Spezivitaet besitzt. (orig.)Additional details
