Metabolism features in the active rheumatoid disease

Description
It was studied the 131I-labelled albumin metabolism in fourteen female patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The half-life of distribution was increased while the turnover half-life and turnover rate was within normal limits. These results led to assume that synthesis and catabolism may not change this disease, not being the responsible mechanism of hypoalbuminemia. Hypoalbuminemia would appear as compensatory mechanism in view of other protein alterations, as hypergammaglobulinemia, without changes of stabilizing and metabolic properties of albumin, perhaps due to albumin molecular alterations
Abstract (Portuguese)
Foi estudado o metabolismo da albumina radioiodada em 14 pacientes do sexo feminino portadoras de artrite reumatoide, determinando-se a meia-vida de distribuicao, de renovacao e a taxa de renovacao da albumina nesta afeccao. Demonstrou-se que apenas a meia-vida de distribuicao esteve aumentada, permanecendo a meia-vida de degradacao e a taxa de renovacao dentro dos limites da normalidade. Destes fatos pode-se inferir que, provavelmente, a sintese e o catabolismo nao estejam alterados nesta doenca, nao sendo estes fenomenos responsaveis pela hipoalbuminemia. Esta, presumivelmente, representaria mecanismo compensatorio perante outras alteracoes, proteicas, como a hipergama-globulinemia sem, entretanto, nitido prejuizo nas funcoes estabilizadoras e metabolicas da albumina, talvez devido a possiveis modificacoes qualitativas de sua moleculaAdditional details
