Surface resonance ionization; total ionization cross-sections of alkali atoms impinging on a tungsten (110) surface

Description
Ionization efficiencies of K and Na atoms reflected from a W (110) surface have been measured. For potassium the ionization efficiency is unity for incident energies of 1 eV up to 10 eV. For sodium it rises from 0.7 at 2 eV up to unity at 10 eV, independent of the angle of incidence. For thermally desorbing particles, the fraction of ions is determined to be 1 and 0.44 for respectively K and Na. The workfunction of the W (110) surface has been established by surface ionization to be (5.17 +- 0.01) eV. (Auth.)
