Description
Hydrogen production today relies on fossil fuels (natural gas, oil and coal) and is accompanied by significant greenhouse gas emissions. Far from being a miracle solution, hydrogen can however become a relevant energy vector under the condition of 'decarbonization', either by carbon capture when using fossil fuels, or by recourse to electric power of nuclear or renewable origin in the case of production by electrolysis of water. This latter technique, more expensive and requiring a supply of water and especially electricity, is not in itself synonymous with carbon neutrality and represents a challenge for the future on which France is betting in a justified but exclusive way. Although not very mature and often more expensive, other modes of hydrogen carbon production should not be abandoned, either in terms of research or industry
Abstract (French)
La production d'hydrogene repose aujourd'hui sur les energies fossiles (gaz naturel, petrole et charbon) et s'accompagne d'importantes emissions de gaz a effet de serre (GES). Loin d'etre une solution miracle, l'hydrogene peut cependant devenir un vecteur d'energie pertinent sous la condition d'une production decarbonee, soit par captage du carbone en cas d'utilisation d'energies fossiles, soit par recours a une electricite d'origine nucleaire ou renouvelable en cas de production par electrolyse de l'eau. Cette derniere technique, plus chere et necessitant un apport d'eau et surtout d'electricite, n'est donc pas en soi synonyme de neutralite carbone et represente un defi d'avenir sur lequel la France parie de facon justifiee mais exclusive. Bien que peu matures et souvent plus couteux, les autres modes de production decarbones d'hydrogene ne doivent pas etre abandonnes, ni sur le plan de la recherche ni sur celui de l'industrie
