Canada's Frontiers: an overview of activity

The author describes the areas of interest in Canada's frontiers. The six regions discussed are: Offshore British Columbia, Alaska, Mainland Northwest Territories and Yukon, Mackenzie Delta/Beaufort Sea, Arctic Islands, and the East Coast. Gas supply and demand are touched upon, indicating that demand is increasing because natural gas is a prime fuel for electricity generation. Supply and demand play a role in replacing declines and satisfying growth. A graph depicting the ultimate potential of natural gas in Canada is shown, followed by a figure displaying comparative conventional oil resources. For the six regions mentioned above, the author provides a brief historical overview of exploration activity and pipeline development. Finally, the author highlights the challenges facing the industry, such as high capital costs, long lead times connecting supply to markets, environmental accountability and responsibility in sensitive areas, technology development, and building positive working relations with local communities. figs
