Description

The mechanism of oxidation of propionic acid with permanganate in alkaline medium was reinvestigated using methyl-14C labelled propionate. The preferential rupture of the αC-βC bond in propionate in highly concentrated alkaline solutions of NaOH (and KOH) was confirmed and the appearance of 14C-labelled oxalate explained by the formation of the symmetrical intermediate which decomposes in two different modes.
