An Experimental Study of the Electrical Conductivity of an Argon Plasma with an Ionizing Additive

Description
The electrical conductivity of a weakly ionized argon plasma in a direct current arc was determined experimentally. The paper describes the experimental rig, which consists of an arc heater giving an argon stream with a temperature of 1000-2000°K and a measuring section. An experimental method is proposed for varying the ratio between the contaminated and neutral components of the plasma over a wide range by introducing an easily ionizable seed. Measurements were carried out at temperatures of 4000-5000°K for contaminated particle concentrations in the range 1013-1015 cm-3. The experimental data were used to study the validity of different approximations of the Chapman-Cowling theory as applied to calculating the electric conductivity of a weakly ionized argon plasma. It is shown that the fourth approximation of the theory is unsatisfactory for calculating the electrical conductivity of an argon plasma in the range of contaminated particle concentrations concerned. Provedeno opytnoe opredelenie jelektroprovodnosti slaboionizovannoj plazmy argona v duge postojannogo toka . Opisana jeksperimental'naja ustanovka, sostojashhaja iz dugovogo podogrevatelja sozdajushhego potok argona s temperaturoj 1000 — 2000°K, i izmeritel'noj sekcii. Predlozhen jeksperimental'nyj metod, pozvoljaju- shhij putem vvedenija legkoionizuemoj dobavki v potok argona var'irovat' v shirokih predelah sootnoshenie mezhdu zarjazhennoj i nejtral'noj komponentami plazmy. Izmerenija provedeny pri temperature 3000 — 5000°K i koncentracijah zarjazhennyh chastic 1013 — 1015 sm-3 . Na osno- vanii opytnyh dannyh issledovana primenimost' razlichnyh priblizhenij teorii Chepmena-. Kaulinga primenitel'no k raschetu jelektroprovodnosti slaboionizovannoj plazmy argona. Pokazano, chto chetvertoe priblizhenie teorii javljaetsja nedostatochnym pri raschete jelektro- provodnosti argonovoj plazmy v ukazannom intervale izmenenija koncentracii zarjazhennyh chastic.
