Gamma and delta hydrides in zirconium alloys

  • 1. Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Chalk River, Ontario. Chalk River Nuclear Labs.

Description

There has been much disagreement in the literature as to whether the f.c.t. γ-hydride, which is based on the composition ZrH, is a metastable precipitate or an equilibrium phase. Mishra et al. (1972) have proposed that a stable γ-hydride is formed by the peritectoid reaction, α-Zr + delta-hydride reversible (2550C) γ-hydride. This note reports some transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies that further question the existence of a peritectoid transformation. (Auth.)
