Description

Temporally stochastic/ abrupt photoluminescence (PL) intermittency (or blinking) has been long recognized to be characteristic of single quantum-emitters as photo induced emission intensity fluctuations are expected to average out over the ensemble. Apart from fluorescent molecules/ proteins and conjugated polymers/ a variety of individual quantum-confined semiconductor nanocrystals (such as quantum-dots) are known to exhibit frequent intermittency (blinking or flickering) upon continuous photo-illumination.
