Size reduction of large objects contaminated with T.R.U

This paper is devoted to the dismantling cell which is operating for five years at the Valduc Center in France. Previously there was a dismantling cell which was working with operators inside, equipped with ventilated clothes. So, these conditions were not very convenient in regard with worker's safety and efficiency. In the eighties, it was decided to design and built a new dismantling cell to break with the drawbacks above mentioned. The main objectives retained for design were: all operations must be performed with remote equipment only the intervention of operators may occur for maintenance, or particular dismantling operations; and wastes packages issued from dismantling cell have to comply with regulations for shallow land disposal (3,7.109 Bq.T-1. This lecture include the main followed parts: considerations on the wastes to be treated, description of the dismantling cell, presentation of the procedures, results based on five years experience, and improvements realized or in progress
