Processing YBa2Cu3Ox powders

  • 1. Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM (USA)

Description

The microstructures and transport properties of sintered YBa2Cu3Ox are highly dependent upon starting powder characteristics and processing conditions. We have carried out a sintering study in an effort to unravel these complex powder-processing-property interrelationships. Four commercial 123 powders prepared by different processes were characterized with respect to phase purity, stoichiometry, particle size, and particle morphology. After cold isostatic pressing, the powders were sintered above and below temperatures where liquid forming decomposition reactions can occur. We will discuss the resulting microstructures and superconducting properties of the sintered samples with respect to powder characteristics and the sintering conditions
