Open fuel in KNK II for investigating cladding failures and their possible consequences

  • 1. Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH (Germany, FR)

Description

Extensive experience is available from a large number of in-pile loop experiments with regard to the behavior of failed fuel elements in LMFBR's. However, some unsolved important items remain because of differences between loop and reactor conditions. An important item is related to the formation of Na3MO4 and its possible consequences. This paper describes an extensive in-pile program with open fuel in the primary sodium of KNK II and the results of the first experiments
