NRC assessment of industry self-improvement initiatives in maintenance
Description
Phase I of the Maintenance and Surveillance Program Plan (MSPP) was completed in June 1986 with the publication of NUREG-1212. The objective of phase I was to survey current maintenance practices in the nuclear industry and evaluate their effectiveness. On October 20, 1986, the MSPP was revised, based on the results of phase I. On October 27, 1986, phase II of the MSPP was approved. Phase II consists of the following projects: continuation of site surveys, further analysis of maintenance performance measures, assessment of industry improvement initiatives, and integration of industry and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) maintenance programs. Other potential phase II projects include conducting a study of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approach to maintenance and drafting a commission policy statement on maintenance
