Description
The NASA Civil Space Technology Initiative (CSTI) was begun in 1987 to develop focused technologies that enhance transportation to, and operations in, Earth orbit and enable next generation science missions. Pathfinder, as the logical next program, is intended to prepare the Nation for a range of missions focusing beyond Earth orbit into the solar system. Nuclear reactor power is the prime candidate for supplying large amounts of power for extended periods in support of future exploration missions. High capacity nuclear systems will be needed for both surface operations and for an electric propulsion cargo vehicle option. The SP-100 space nuclear power system development program will form the basis for future growth capability to the high performance and power levels needed for future missions
