Structural variations and physical properties of lignin coke
Description
The studied lignin is a by-product of the process of ethanol production from eucaliptus. It was heat-treated under inert atmosphere conditions at increasing temperatures from 3000C up to 26000C. This material has about 35 weight % of carbon yield and low ash content (0.70 w %). The structural variations were studied by wide-angle X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering and infra-red spectroscopy. The bulk and the ''real'' density of the samples have also been determined as a function of the heat treatment temperatures. These experimental results enabled us to establish a mechanism of structure variation based on the formation of a graphite-like and porous structure within the initially amorphous lignin matrix. It has been possible to specify the adequate heat treatment temperature based upon the lignin coke applications. (author)

A lignina, subproduto da obtencao de alcool a partir da madeira, foi analisada quimicamente, verificando-se que contem aproximadamente 35% em peso de carbono fixo e um baixo teor de cinzas (0.70% em peso). Este material foi tratado termicamente a diferentes temperaturas, entre 300 e 26000C, sob atmosfera inerte, obtendo-se coques com estrutura, composicao quimica e propriedades fisicaS variadas. A caracterizacao estrutural dos coques de lignina tratados a diferentes temperaturas foi efetuada por meio da tecnica de difracao de raio-X, de espalhamento de raio-X a baixo angulo e de espectrofotometria de absorcao otica na regiao do infravermelho. A correlacao da caracterizacao estrutural com a composicao quimica e com as caracteristicas fisicas, dos coques obtidos, permitiu formalizar um modelo estrutural da transformacao deste material em escalas a nivel atomico e ''macroscopico''. Os resultados obtidos das caracterizacoes possibilitaram indicar as temperaturas adequadas dos tratamentos termicos, a serem escolhidas, conforme as exigencias da aplicacao do coque a ser obtido.
