Comparative uptake of 234U, 238U, 239Pu, 241Am and 244Cm by boxelder trees (Acer negundo) inhabiting a contaminated Tennessee floodplain
Description
The patterns of seasonal change for 234U, 238U, 239Pu, 241Am and 244Cm concentrations in leaves from box elder trees growing on a contaminated Tennessee floodplain are described, and relative uptake of these five actinides from soil is compared. This study indicates that the biological transfer of 244Cm, 238U and 234U from soil to leaves was greater than for 239Pu. The greater uptake of Cm and U compared with Pu is consistent with their hypothesized availability to plants from soil based on their environmental chemistry. (author)
