UHV compatible cylindrical mirror analyzer designed for angular measurements

Description

We describe a versatile, ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) compatible, cylindrical mirror analyzer designed for double differential electron measurements in angle and energy. The analyzer can be used to study the electron emission induced by ion bombardment of solid surfaces and in thin foil transmission experiments. In the case of ion bombardment on surfaces at grazing incidence this configuration allows the observation of electrons ejected near the reflected beam direction. In an ion-foil transmission experiment we can measure the electron energy distribution along the ion beam direction. We tested the performance of this analyzer studying the Si L2,3 MM Auger electron emission for different angles of ejection. We compare convoy-electron distributions induced by 60 keV protons traversing Al and C foils placed in UHV with those obtained under standard vacuum conditions (4x10-6 Torr) and show convoy-electron modification by changes in surface properties induced by controlled Na-deposition. We also give low energy (<10 eV) convoy-electron spectra induced by H2+ ion bombardment. (orig.)
