Extraction and transport of radioactive cations through S.L.M.s with functionalized calixarenes

Description

Treatment of radioactive liquid wastes needs very selective extractants in order to minimize the volume to be disposed of. Several crown ethers and functionalized calixarenes were tested in order to remove 85Sr, 137Cs, 237Np, 239Pu, 241Am from high salinity acidic liquid wastes. Two classes of calixarenes displayed exceptional efficiency and selectivity: calix[4]arene mono (or bis) crown 6 for cesium which proved to be much more selective than crown ethers, and phosphinoxide acetamide calix[4]arenes for actinides, mainly trivalent ones. These properties were confirmed by tests carried out on supported liquid membranes. (authors)
