The electron density at 105 K in different regions of the solar atmosphere derived from an intersystem line of O IV

Description
Electron densities are derived for typical solar active regions and flares from EUV spectral lines of O IV, N V, C IV and Si IV. The densities pertain to electron temperatures near 105 K. The spectra were recorded by the NRL spectrograph flown on Skylab. Typical densities found for active regions are ca. 1011 cm-3. The density in flares can range from ca. 1011 cm-3 to above 1013 cm-3. The volumes of high density emitting plasma in active regions and flares are quite small, with values ranging from 1.5 1023 cm3 to less than 2.2 1020 cm3. Also, the density in a polar coronal hole is about one-half of the density in a typical quiet Sun region, at a temperature near 6 104 K. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Aus Spektrallinien von O IV, N V, C IV und Si IV im fernen Ultraviolet (EUV) wurden Elektronendichten fuer typische aktive Bereiche und Flares bestimmt. Die Dichten entsprechen Elektronentemperaturen von etwa 105 K. Die Spektren wurden vom NRL-Spektographen an Bord von Skylab aufgenommen. In den aktiven Bereichen beobachtet man Dichten von ca. 1011 cm-3, in den Flares koennen die Dichten Werte zwischen ca. 1011 cm-3 bis ueber 1013 cm-3 erreichen. Die Plasmen hoher Dichte emittierenden Volumenbereiche in den aktiven Regionen und den Flares sind relativ klein und reichen von etwa 1,5 1023 cm3 bis weniger als 2,2 1020 cm3. Ausserdem ist die Dichte in einem polaren Loch der Korona etwa halb so gross im Vergleich zur Dichte einer ruhigen Sonnenregion mit einer Temperatur von etwa 6 104 K. (orig.)Additional details
