Study into subjective tolerance in peripheral arteriography

From March 1980 until May 1981 eighty patients underwent arteriography of leg arteries applying the Seldinger method, with contrast medium and admixed local anesthetic being varied. Blood pressure, pulse and electrocardiographic control were maintained over the whole process. Immediately after injection of the contrast medium, patients were asked to explain their sensations of pain and heat, and their feelings considering the possibility of a repeated examination of this kind. It was obvious that enhancing the dosage of the anesthetic significantly reduces the pain, whereas the vascular irritation, felt as a sensation of heat, is difficult to alleviate. (orig.)
