Description
On the basis of tight-binding band electronic structure calculations, we examined why TlSrRCuO5 (R = La, Nd) is a superconductor while its analog TlBaRCuO5 and its homolog TlSrRCaCu2O7 are not. Our study strongly suggests that, for a Tl-O single rock-salt layer phase with very short in-plane Cu-O distance such as TlSrRCuO5, the CuO2 layer x2-y2 band is raised high enough in energy for the Tl-O layer to create holes in the CuO2 layer
