Description
After having outlined the importance of the development of knowledge about materials used in the nuclear sector, and notably the needs of development of reliable methods to assess and justify the lifetime of the present nuclear fleet, and to develop better materials for the present and future nuclear sector, this report indicates the various challenges to be met with the associated time horizon, the associated scientific locks, and the associated R and D themes. It also indicates the different related research bodies and projects. It proposes numerous problems to be addressed in different fields: steels (for vessels and circuits), corrosion mechanisms, zirconium alloys, fuel material, nano-structured reinforced steels, surface engineering for extreme environments, advanced metallurgical processes, composites for extreme environments, materials for fusion, structure mechanics, other refractory materials, confinement materials (glasses, concretes, clays), multi-scale modelling and simulation, experimentation, and collaborations. An agenda is proposed for developments in the fields of materials, and of design and validation methodologies. Required means and partnerships are discussed and overviewed, and education programs proposed by universities and engineering schools are briefly mentioned
