Estimation of method for γ-initiated emulsion post-polymerization of styrene
Description
The properties are compared of polystyrene obtained by γ-initiated emulsion post-polymerization and of commercial polymer obtained without γ-initiation. The scheme of installment for performing post-polymerization is described. Post-polymerization of styrene up to deep conversion (approximately 90%) proceeds for 5-8 hours which is comparable with duration of industrial processes. The duration of post-polymerization decreases with increasing temperature, concentration of emulsifier, dose rate, and dose of preliminary irradiation. Expenditure on γ-irradiation is 7 roubles per ton of polystyrene. It can be expected that cost of polystyrene obtained by post-polymerization will not differ considerably from that of industrial emulsion polymer. The polystyrene obtained by post-polymerization has high ability towards orientation, is very strong in oriented state, improved adhesive and thickening ability. γ-initiated emulsion post-polymerization can be recommended for industry
