Dissolution studies on microwave synthesized nanocrystalline thoria powder in nitric acid medium

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Div., Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (India)

Description

Dissolution of thorium dioxide in concentrated nitric acid is extremely slow. Dissolution study of thoric powder prepared by microwave denitration were carried out. The results of the experiments demonstrated for the first time that nanocrystalline thorium dioxide powder prepared by direct denitration of an aqueous solution of thorium nitrate in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by using microwave heating and calcined at 600 deg C can be dissolved completely in 7.5 M boiling nitric acid medium in the absence of fluoride. Dissolution rate of the powder samples increases with the decrease in calcination temperature. (author)
