Shielding design studies for land mine detection system

  • 1. Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul (Turkey)

Description

A land mine detection system using thermal neutron analysis (TNA) , fast neutron analysis (FNA) and neutron backscattering (NBS) techniques was designed by means of Monte Carlo simulation(MCNP). In the simulations, 252Cf fast neutron source, three NaI detectors (3x3 inches) for detection of characteristic gamma rays and eight BF3 neutron detectors for backscattered neutrons were used. In order to shield the isotopic neutron source(252Cf), a suitable material was searched. The optimisation was focused on choosing the shielding material and its thickness. For this purpose, effectiveness of some materials (borated polyethylene, borated paraffin, borated - lead polyethylene and boric acid) were investigated.
