Thyroid cancer in Belorussian children after the Chernobyl accident -cytogenetic and immunological studies

In the wake of the Chernobyl accident, 172 cases of thyroid cancer were diagnosed and operated upon in children in the Belorussian Republic by January 1, 1993. Instances of thyroid cancer were detected in numbers and forms not observed formerly. For an overall evaluation of the status of patients, and also for prognosis of the disease, it is important to supplement the usual examination techniques (sonography and scintigraphy) by cytogenetic examinations, especially to determine the levels of TSH, FT4, TG, cytokine (IL 1, TNF, IF), and lymphocyte function. Abstract (German)

Nach der Tschernobyl-Havarie wurden bis zum 1. Januar 1993 in der Republik Weissrussland 172 Faelle von Schilddruesenkrebs (SD-Krebs) bei Kindern diagnostiziert und operiert. Es ergaben sich Faelle von SD-Krebs in solcher Zahl und in solcher Form, wie sie frueher niemals beobachtet wurden. Fuer eine Gesamtbewertung des Zustandes des Kranken und fuer die Prognose der Erkrankung ist es wichtig, neben ueblichen Untersuchungsmethoden (Sonographie und Szintigraphie) auch zytogenetische Untersuchungen durchzufuehren, insbesondere die Werte fuer TSH, FT4, TG, Zytokine (IL-1, TNF, IF) und die funktionale Aktivitaet der Lymphozyten zu ermitteln.
