Nuclear decay following deep inelastic scattering at 500 GeV

Description

Neutron spectra from nuclear decay have been measured in coincidence with scattering muons from Fermilab experiment E665, for targets of H, D, C, Ca and Pb. The momentum and energy transfer to the struck quark is measured by detecting the scattered muon in the E665 spectrometer. The hadronization process following quark propagation can excite the nucleus to high energies. The nucleus can then decay by neutron emission, as given by standard statistical models. The shape of the neutron spectra and the neutron multiplicities will be compared to these models for several excitation energies of the residual nucleus. The dependence of Q2 and ν for the neutron spectra will also be presented
