Colour etching of W mono- and polycrystals by oxidation method

Description

A method for colour etching of tungsten is developed to determine the crystallogrpahic orientations of planes of single crystals and of grains in a polycrystal. The investigated samples are first heated in a vacuum to 450-500 deg C after a portion of air is fed for 1-5 min, then air is pumped out, after which the samples are cooled in vacuum, As a result of different rates of oxidation of variously oriented planes, films formed thereon have different thicknesses and colours. The above method can be employed, in particular, for studying recrystallization processes, monostructures of films obtained by precipitation in a vacuum, etc
