Apparent quadratic deformation scaling of transition strengths in samarium isotopes

  • 1. Physics Department, Technical University Munich, 8046 Garching (Germany)

Description

Recent experimental investigations of a sequence of samarium isotopes report an apparent quadratic deformation dependence of the total B(M1) strength of low-lying 1+ states. Considering these states as the fragmented distribution of a collective state, the angular analog to the giant dipole, it is demonstrated that such a deformation dependence arises quite naturally when short range correlations and surface effects are taken into account. The role of such additional parameters in determining the variation of the total transition strength is discussed and a comparison with the picture of pure contrarotation is made
