Individual detection of plutonium exposures
Description
Internal plutonium exposures can be detected either by direct measurement of X emission, the detector being on the individual's thorax, or by indirect measurements based on the alpha activity of biological excreta. In vivo X-spectrometry supplies a quick answer but the reasons for misinterpretation are numerous and the detection threshold remains high. Radiotoxicological techniques applied to urine and feces are slow but their detection threshold is very low and they allow alpha counting in excellent conditions. Both direct and indirect methods are not mutually exclusive and must be complementary to one another
