Study on associated masses and dumping factors during vibrations of cylinders in viscous liquids

Description

The results are presented of an experimental study and approximate theoretical calculations of the apparent masses and the vibration attenuation coefficients for relatively long cylindrical pipes vibrating in large volumes of water, acetone, glycerine, and mercury. It is shown that the apparent mass in real fluids is essentially a function of their viscosity and may be several times in excess of the theoretical values for idealized fluid. The criterial functions have been derived for calculating the apparent masses and the vibration attenuation coefficients for the cylindrical pipes of 7-20 mm in diameter in the fluids with densities rho = (0.81 + 13.88) x 10-6 kg sec2 cm-4 and viscosity μ = (0.003 + 40) x 10-6 kg sec cm-2
