The clinical value of thin-slice high resolution CT scan and fast volume scan in the diagnosis of cranial basis and craniofacial bone fractures

Objective: To evaluate the thin-slice high resolution CT scan and fast volume scan in the diagnosis of cranial basis and craniofacial bone fractures. Method: The thin-slice high resolution CT findings of 57 cases with cranial basis and craniofacial bone fractures were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed with the review of literatures. Results Simple fractures of base of skull (13 cases); simple fractures of nasal bone (10 cases); simple fractures of orbital cavity (7 cases); simple fractures of jugal bone (4 cases); complex fractures of cranial basis and craniofacial bone (24 cases) were revealed in the CT images. The images of thin-slice high resolution CT scan demonstrated the details of the fractures excellently. Conclusion: Thin-slice high resolution CT scan and 3D images of volume scan are necessary imaging modalities for diagnosis of the cranial basis and craniofacial bone fractures. (authors)
